The Manufacturing Design and Development Director is responsible for leading and developing a team of manufacturing engineers, manufacturing engineering technicians and specialists with the responsibility for developing, validating, and implementing: manufacturing processes, documentation and flow; production equipment and tooling; facility layout and improvements; and, support of design for manufacturing, sourcing, and quality aspects for new product introductions and major improvement initiatives.
This role is responsible for leading efforts to optimize manufacturing operations through the design and integration of processes utilizing various engineering skill sets. Builds and develops processes, procedures, and tooling to support strategic direction and new programs. Leads the development and implementation of new and advanced technologies, tools, and processes that deliver future state operations capabilities in manufacturing.
This individual needs to be highly regarded in the areas of influencing and working across the organization as a senior leader.
Duties and Responsibilities/Essential Functions
- Set the strategy and execution plan for manufacturing engineering on new product introduction projects, delivering a world-class, cost effective, quality production line with an efficient, effective, comprehensive, and on-time implementation.
- Lead Manufacturing Engineering project management aspects for business case, design requirements, capital costs, schedule, risk, and resource budget development, monitoring, and execution.
- Reduce overall cost in the manufacturing value stream by improving safety, quality, cost and delivery.
- Lead manufacturing organization in the areas of Lean Manufacturing, Manufacturing Engineering Product Development, Design for Manufacturing, Tooling, and new product introductions.
- Recruit, assign, direct, coach and evaluate engineers to support departmental and organization goals.
- Ensure concurrent development of tool, process, and facilities planning in conjunction with design or rate change implementations. Conduct tool design, facilities plans, and planning sequence reviews as required.
- Explore, propose, and lead the implementation of advanced manufacturing processes and technology including automation.
- Direct development, implementation, and execution of Manufacturing product development policies and practices and incorporation of such into PD/NPI standards and training.
- Establish and maintain critical relationships with internal and external customers.
- Provide leadership for problem resolution to facilitate faster solutions and improved working relationships.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Demonstrated Performance Competencies:
- Minimum of 7 years in a similar management role with direct supervision.
- Bachelors degree in Engineering, preferably Industrial/Manufacturing or combined combination of relevant education and experience
- Proven ability to coach members with specific and measurable objectives in areas such as people management, leadership, and quality.
- Proficient in MS Office Suite.
- Aerospace background is preferred but not required.
- Technical skills in Lean Manufacturing techniques, Kaizen, Process Improvement, materials management, production scheduling, concurrent design, product development, and project management.
- Strong customer orientation.
- Ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the company. Strong presentation skills.
- Ability to effectively handle escalations and time critical issues. Remains productive, provides solutions, and meets goals in challenging situations.
- Skilled at coordinating multiple efforts, organizing and prioritizing work, communicating technical issues, and supervising a team of individuals with differing levels of skill and experience, enabling them to achieve performance and quality standards.
- Articulates ideas clearly and concisely in a variety of settings, adjusting the message to match the audience. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Problem analysis and problem resolution at both a strategic and functional level.
- Proficient at maintaining budgets and cost effectiveness; interprets financial reports and takes appropriate corrective actions.
- Ability to work within and develop high performance teams; strong team player.
