Your role
Reporting to the Software Engineering Manager, the Software Engineer is required to develop software products that will be used to protect and enhance the capability of the Australian Defence Force. Contribute to process improvement initiatives as well as coaching and mentoring of junior team members.
As a Software Engineer you will work in conjunction with other project team members to ensure that products and software systems are efficiently developed and performing as intended to meet customer and business requirements. Working in a transdisciplinary manner to ensure that all elements of the software development and system will perform as intended together.
Key responsibilities
- Contribute to the software engineering effort throughout the product or system lifecycle, including:
- User needs analysis and requirement definition
- Design definition, analysis and documentation
- Software coding and code reviews
- Developing automated software unit and system tests
- Software and system testing
- Software troubleshooting and debugging
- Participate in software planning activities (program increment and sprint) such as story definition and estimation.
- Communicate and collaborate effectively and professionally with other software engineers as well as systems, hardware and other design functions, including customers, sub-contractors and suppliers, with a focus on identifying and mitigating risks and resolving technical cross-functional problems.
- Contribute to the development of new design approaches, systems and technologies as well as processes to support continuous improvement.
Skills and qualification
- Software engineering knowledge and capability in the engineering design and development of systems/products to meet customer requirements.
- Strong coding skills with 3+ years of experience in C++ programming. Knowledge in other programming languages such as C and Python scripting is also essential.
- Exceptional problem-solving skills.
- Strong work ethics, ability to work with minimal supervision, and a desire to constantly improve software quality and development processes.
- Bachelor Degree in Engineering or Science, with a major in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical/Electronics, Computer Systems, Control Systems or Telecommunications.
- The candidate must be an Australian citizen, and able to obtain and maintain a Security NV1 Clearance.
Desirable to have
- Prior experience working in Agile and/or SAFe oriented projects/organizations.
- Prior experience in DevSecOps and software development in CI/CD environment with automated testing.
- Experience in the Defence industry
- Already holds a Security NV1 Clearance
