An Aircraft Seating Upholstery Technician (or Interior Specialist) responsible for seat foam build-up and sewing machine operation is a specialized tradesperson who fabricates, repairs, and refurbishes passenger and crew seats to ensure comfort, safety, and compliance with aviation standards (FAA/EASA). This role involves high-precision work with fabrics, leather, and specialized foam to meet OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) specifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Layering Densities: Combining different foam densities to meet specific comfort, durability, and safety (fire-blocking) standards.
  • Repairing Structure: Assessing seat cushions for wear, replacing damaged foam, and ensuring proper ergonomics.
  • Bonding: Utilizing adhesives to assemble, bond, and attach foam to seating structures.
Sewing Machine Operation & Sewing
  • Industrial Sewing: Operating industrial-grade, walking-foot, or double-needle sewing machines to stitch leather, fabric, and synthetic materials.
  • Dress Cover Fabrication: Creating new seat covers (dress covers) from patterns or by copying existing covers.

General Upholstery & Assembly

  • Patterning: Designing or modifying patterns for foam and upholstery.
  • Installation: Fitting, stretching, and securing new upholstery onto seat cushions using glue, cement, staples, and Hog rings.
  • Compliance: Ensuring all materials, particularly foam and fabric, adhere to strict FAA/EASA flame-retardant standards.
